The influence of the troubadour movement also reached Spain, thanks mainly to the Camino de Santiago. Possibly as early as the 12th century there were troubadours in Spain.

Spanish medieval music

One of the jewels of the Spanish secular medieval music is a huge collection of the Cantigas de Santa María of Alfonso X “The Wise” (1221-1284). He´s known that the King not only organized the collection but also he was the composer of some of them. On the book are 417 songs written in Galician-Portuguese and dedicated to the Virgin.

There are many pictures where we can find a lot of information about the daily life of the medieval society, the mix of the three cultures and the instruments. A cantiga is a poetry and musical composition about the miracles of Mother Mary.

Even though the texts are religious we consider these compositions secular music.

The oldest cantigas of which we keep text and music are the Cantigas de Amigo by Martín Codax, nicknamed the Juglar de Vigo. It is a set of songs in which the poet puts on the lips of a woman the pain for the departure of the beloved or friend.
